Aged care expert critical at ‘bed blockers’ reference for older people

A Charles Sturt University aged care expert says older people should not be blamed for a lack of acute beds in the state’s public hospital system.

Dr Maree Bernoth this week gave evidence to a New South Wales Upper House inquiry into the role of registered nurses in aged care homes.

If there's not enough beds for other people in our acute system, then it's up to governments to provide those extra beds. It's not incumbent on the older person to feel they shouldn't be there.

Dr Bernoth says the term is wrong.

“Older people have a right to be an acute care bed as much as anybody,” she said.
