14 Jul Questions raised over how national changes will impact aged care sector.
There are differing views on the Federal Government’s move to increase nursing homes fees. Aged care expert, Doctor Maree Bernoth says the federal government’s reforms to increase nursing homes fees will not address the systemic flaws in the sector.
I have seen aged care facilities with chandeliers in the foyer and the residents laying in their own faeces.
Doctor Maree Bernoth says despite numerous cases or abuse, complaints and deaths, nothing’s been done to fix the inconsistent and broken system.
She says staff must receive better education and support and should be paid the same rates as nurses working in acute care.
“When proprietors are looking at profits it’s easy to reduce staff, reduce their education budgets by having staff watch education on a television screen,” she said.
“We also need some sort of register for care workers, currently a care worker who is inappropriate can be given a glowing reference so they can go and work somewhere else.”
